Director of Strategy and Partnerships Julia Bishop, Policy Advisor Clare McGall, and Epidemiologist Kayla Strong from the AMR Policy Accelerator participated in the annual ReAct Africa and South Centre annual AMR conference in Livingstone, Zambia, from July 9th to 11th. Themed “Global Accountability for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Response: Investing in Priorities for Africa,” the conference gathered over 100 policymakers, civil society organizations, researchers, and stakeholders, facilitating discussions on urgent antimicrobial resistance (AMR) challenges.
The Accelerator team contributed with two poster presentations focusing on National Action Plan targets in Africa and the alignment of AMR initiatives with the Sustainable Development Goals. Julia Bishop presented on unifying goals for AMR, and the 1-10-100 goals, which were proposed in 2024 by the Bellagio Group for Accelerating AMR Action.
In preparation for the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR in September 2024, the team engaged in a pre-conference roundtable on AMR governance and accountability. Key takeaways from the discussion included:
- The importance of context-specific targets to drive accountability;
- The need for improved communication around the importance and urgency of AMR;
- The critical necessity to prioritize the needs of low- and middle-income countries in discussions leading up to the High-Level Meeting and beyond.
