Highlights from the Fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR and Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform Plenary

From November 14-16, the Fourth Global High-level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Geneviève Boily-Larouche and Julia Bishop represented the AMR Policy Accelerator by joining the discussions on how to move the UNGA Political Declaration on AMR from promise to practice.

The conference was followed by the second annual plenary meeting of the Multi-stakeholder Partnership Platform on AMR. This Platform brings together over 250 organizations, including those in agriculture, animal and the environmental health from around the world, and meets annually in-person.

Julia Bishop shared some key takeaways from the meeting:

  1. The importance of harnessing the energy, passion, and dedication of those involved, offering hope for real progress.
  2. AMR presents a multifaceted challenge that requires creative and diverse solutions that target specific contexts. By leveraging collective knowledge and expertise, we can think outside the box, learning from each other’s experiences to identify impactful solutions.
  3. Moving the Declaration from promise to practice will require a significant investment of effort, finances, and political will. To make meaningful progress, it is essential to use limited resources efficiently, draw on existing structures and frameworks, and ensure that the process is inclusive, transparent, and equitable.

The Fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR and the subsequent plenary meeting were important opportunities to move the commitments in the recently adopted political declaration on AMR forward. The AMR Policy Accelerator remains committed to supporting these efforts and advancing the policies that address the global challenge of AMR equitably.
