From September 20-23, 2024, the World One Health Congress took place in Cape Town, focusing on major One Health challenges. Representing the Global Strategy Lab’s AMR Policy Accelerator, Geneviève Boily-Larouche, Managing Director, and Suzanne Naro, Policy Advisor, attended and shared some key learnings from the event:
- The concept of One Health is now well established, where the human, animal, and planet health interconnections are better understood. Next steps require us to reflect deeply through the One Health implementation process, emphasizing better integration of the environmental and plant sectors.
- Integrating and accelerating equity, diversity, and inclusion into the One Health research we design and conduct; and the policies and governance we develop is key to preventing, mitigating, and recovering from AMR, zoonoses, and future pandemics.
- Stronger communication is needed to support better implementation of the One Health approach. We need to reflect on how to measure the successes of One Health to better communicate the benefits of the approach to communities, professionals, and governments.
We’re honored to have had our team on the ground at this exciting event, contributing to these important conversations and taking these learnings forward.
