Enhancing the Gender-responsiveness of AMR Research

Incorporating gender analysis in AMR research is crucial for identifying opportunities to develop gender responsive programs and policies.

Gender shapes roles and opportunities across livestock sectors by determining access to resources like antimicrobials and processes for dealing with AMR exposure and resistant infections. For instance, studies have shown women livestock producers are less likely to report purchasing medicines and vaccines for animals they own or manage and are less likely to access animal health service providers like veterinarians. Despite these serious implications of gendered inequities, there is little research on the intersection of gender and AMR.

To respond to this gap in AMR research, the Global Strategy Lab’s AMR Policy Accelerator partnered with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) to develop a conceptual framework and a set of research questions for researchers aiming to enhance gender inclusivity in AMR research within livestock systems. Published in January 2025, further testing and evaluation of this framework in real-life scenarios is planned for 2025.

If you are interested in being kept up to date about the next phase of this project or would be interested in applying this framework to one of your own projects, we would love to hear about it policy@globalstrategylab.org Link .
