Last week, GSL Research Fellow Lindsay Wilson co-published a commentary in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization discussing WHO member states’ challenges fully complying with the International Health Regulations (IHR).
In the article, the authors acknowledge that countries are not intentionally non-compliant with the IHR, but identified key challenges that member states reported. These challenges range from lack of professional personnel to lacking equipment, structural set-ups of member state governments, and a general lack of understanding of the regulations, to name just a few.
The authors recommend that the WHO invest in better training material, strengthens peer-to-peer communication, sets core capacity standards for member states and provides intersectoral support.
