On April 23, GSL Director Steven Hoffman was quoted in a Vox Media article by Julia Belluz discussing Vietnam’s approach to dealing with COVID-19 for the past 18 months. The country sealed its borders and saw record-low casualties from the virus and the economy grew in spite of globally depressed markets.
In the article, Hoffman argues that despite the measure working, border closures are hard to calibrate. He explains that once a population accepts total border closures as a legitimate measure, it could be used in instances that are not global pandemics.
