GSL Welcomes Dr. Mathieu Poirier as New Director

After 10 years of visionary leadership, Dr. Steven Hoffman will be stepping down as GSL’s Founding Director and we are pleased to announce Mathieu Poirier as the Lab’s new Director.  

Dr. Poirier is a York Research Chair (Tier II) in Global Health Equity, an Assistant Professor of Social Epidemiology at York University, and a co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Global Governance of Antimicrobial Resistance. He earned his Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of South Florida and completed his PhD at McMaster University. 

Dr. Poirier has been with the Lab for 8 years, starting as a research fellow before moving into the role of Research Director of the Global Legal Epidemiology program. His contributions have been central to many of GSL’s achievements during this time. In the past 2 years as co-Director, Dr. Poirier oversaw the Lab’s daily operations, contributed to the development of the EDI Strategic Plan and strengthened relationships with GSL partners. Mathieu has worked throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, directing vector-borne disease research for the University of Notre Dame Haiti Program. As a founding member of the Grounded Project Link , he was Academic Lead and Executive Producer of the documentary film More Than Migrants Link and supports the Las Nubes EcoCampus Link study abroad program in Costa Rica.  

On the research front, his contributions range from evaluating international law to developing equity metrics for health policy. Dr. Poirier has led pioneering studies on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Link , examined the effectiveness of border closures during the COVID-19 pandemic Link , explored the broader effectiveness of international treaties Link , and advanced the science of measuring health inequities Link . As we enter this new chapter of leadership, there’s no doubt the Global Strategy Lab is in good hands. 

We are forever indebted to Dr. Hoffman for his years of service in building the Lab to be a world-class, innovative and interdisciplinary hub of global health research. Under Steven Hoffman’s leadership, the foundation was built for world-class research and policy offerings in global and public health arenas, while nurturing a supportive and equity-driven workplace. Dr. Hoffman will continue to provide his unmatched scientific expertise and strategic guidance to GSL in his capacity as an Investigator and Scientific Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Global Governance of Antimicrobial Resistance, and as a Professor and a Dahdaleh Distinguished Chair at York University. We congratulate him on his secondment as Chief of Staff at the Wellcome Trust.
