GSL Director quoted in Yahoo Sports Article about athletes’ role in reducing vaccine hesitancy

On December 29, GSL Director Steven Hoffman was quoted in a piece on Yahoo Sports discussing the potential role athletes could play in assuring the public the safety of the various COVID-19 vaccines.

In the article, Hoffman argued that athletes with their immense social media followings might be some of the very best and most effective messengers. His answers were based on a 2015 Public Health study GSL published, investigating how celebrities influence health-related behaviour. In it, Hoffman and Tan found that “humans are biologically, psychologically and socially hardwired to follow the advice of celebrities. … Anything that they talk about or do themselves, they lend their golden glow to those products or actions.”
