On March 30, GSL Director Steven Hoffman was featured in an article in the Toronto Star exploring the role artificial intelligence is playing in the fight to curb the spread of COVID-19.
In the article, Hoffman highlighted the importance of precision in global health. The current response to the novel Coronavirus, however, was according to him shaped with “blunt tools” such as school closures and social distancing. Hoffman explained the benefits of measures like social distancing in slowing down the virus and flattening the number of cases, but without “surveillance testing” it will be difficult to get to the real number of active cases. In our current model we are only ever chasing a shadow of the case number.
