GSL Director interviewed on CTV News about COVID-19 case spike in Canada and Quarantine Act

On March 25, GSL Director Steven Hoffman appeared CTV News to discuss the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Canada and the government’s new actions under the Quarantine Act.

In the interview, Hoffman explained that the spike in cases is a “shadow” of Canada’s situation 2 weeks ago and was expected. He added that it would be worrisome if two weeks from now we wouldn’t see any stabilization in the number of cases, given the more severe restrictions on business and travel.

He also contextualized the government’s decision to mandate isolation for any new arrivals in Canada under the Quarantine Act. Hoffman explained that the government likely used this measure because they were unsatisfied with people’s reaction of their strong request (but not mandate) to self-isolate after returning to Canada.
