On April 16, GSL Director Steven Hoffman was quoted in a Global News article discussing the lifting of certain COVID-19 restrictions in the near future. On April 15, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that it would be weeks until Canada would consider loosening restrictions.
In the article, Hoffman warned that lifting restrictions too early might negate the “hard earned successes” won during this current social distancing phase. He also explained that the response of the different provinces might vary based on the relevant data.
When asked which measures might be eased up first, Hoffman mused that it will be the most costly and least helpful restrictions that would be reviewed first. One example might be opening international borders again if an instant test is available and arrivals would commit to a 2-week quarantine.
