On March 13, Dr. Mathieu Poirier, Director at the Global Strategy Lab (GSL), was invited to deliver a lecture at the Escola de Direito de São Paulo, Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV). The lecture titled “Principles and Methods of Global Legal Epidemiology” introduced professors and graduate students to the foundations of global legal epidemiology, an emerging field that examines the role of international law as a factor in the cause, distribution, and promotion of health around the world.
Organized by Professor Daniel Wei Liang Wang, with Professor Sergio Mittlaender serving as discussant, the lecture highlighted findings from GSL’s international law systematic review, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Using global legal epidemiology methods, the study evaluates the effectiveness of international treaties and applies those learnings to inform the design of future treaties.

“It was a pleasure to share our research with a brilliant room of legal scholars at FGV,” said Dr. Poirier. “The exchange of ideas is immensely helpful to inform our future studies, and I hope it can inspire colleagues in Brazil to contribute to the growing field of global legal epidemiology.”
The visit underscores the Global Strategy Lab’s commitment to sharing its research globally and engaging new audiences in the growing field of global legal epidemiology.
