Smart Choice Process Workshop in Nigeria

Nigeria has furthered the implementation of their 2024-28 National Action Plan (NAP) on AMR by hosting a Smart Choice Process workshop in Lagos from August 5th to 7th.

A One Health Approach to Reaching National Goals

Throughout this workshop, 29 experts from across human, animal, environmental, and plant sectors gathered to support Nigeria’s shared commitment in tackling AMR. The Smart Choice Process workshop encouraged evidence-based and open dialogue to develop strategies that unite scientific disciplines and national goals alike.

We are grateful to our Nigerian governmental partners and the incredible Core Team on the ground—Dr. Demola Onakomaiya, Dr. Tochi Okwor, Dr. Mwapu Ndahi, Okea Rita A, James Yakubu, Dr. Ridwan Yahaya, Dr. Oluwaseun Odebajo, Anietie Akpan, Dr. Chavan Laxmikant, Dr. Ayodele Majedokunmi, Dr. Solomon Olorunleke, and Vivian Bellonwu—for their leadership in the prioritization of impactful AMR interventions. Additionally, our AMR Policy Accelerator team, Suzanne Naro and Heba Qazilbash, had a wonderful time virtually supporting the facilitation of fruitful, multi-sectoral dialogues to guide the prioritization of AMR activities in Nigeria’s NAP.

A Network of Global Partnerships

We are incredibly thankful to the Wellcome Trust for the unwavering support in making these initiatives possible. We would also like to extend our appreciation for the support of our partners: Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Environment, and Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, as well as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. With these partnerships and support, Nigeria can continue to effectively implement NAP interventions when approaching AMR.
