Researchers from across the SAFE AMR Governance Partnership met virtually to review progress. Funded by a SSHRC Partnership Grant and coordinated by the Global Strategy Lab, the partnership brings together interdisciplinary experts and works to develop sustainable, acceptable, fair, and effective strategies to mitigate antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The teams shared updates on recent and forthcoming evidence reviews of policies to reduce antibiotic use in people and animals, economic modelling of government AMR policies, the global landscape of antibiotic stewardship, the political feasibility of AMR strategies, One Health and veterinary policy, and what “fair” AMR policy looks like.
There were recurring themes throughout the conversation, including the need for AMR interventions to fit local contexts and the people responsible for carrying them out. The discussion also underlined how many national action plans still lack the funding and implementation plans needed to turn goals into action. The researchers noted how much the global landscape has changed since the partnership launched in 2022, including cuts to global health funding, the adoption of the revised Global Action Plan on AMR, and the upcoming Independent Panel on Evidence for Action against AMR.
