Lancet Publication: Open Letter in Support of WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) is facing significant cuts to its global funding, prompting widespread concern over the potential impacts on international public health systems, and emergency response efforts.

In response to the budget cuts, The Lancet has published an “Open Letter in Support of WHO,” which has been endorsed by past and current heads of WHO Collaborating Centres. The letter highlights the urgent need to protect the WHO’s leadership capacity during health crises and maintain its international cross-border coordination.

The Global Strategy Lab was designated a WHO Collaborating Centre on Global Governance of Antimicrobial Resistance (WHOCC) in 2019. Now in its second mandate period, the WHOCC continues to support in assessing and addressing the growing global health and development threat of antimicrobial resistance. Recently, the Global Strategy Lab’s WHOCC was also invited to join the WHO AMR Surveillance and Quality Assessment Collaborating Centres Network, which supports WHO’s efforts in supporting countries build capacity to develop and implement AMR surveillance.

Dr. Mathieu Poirier, Director of the Global Strategy Lab and Co-Director of its WHO Collaborating Centre on Global Governance of Antimicrobial Resistance, is among the signatories urging for greater WHO funding.
