Exciting Changes at the Global Strategy Lab!

Global Strategy Lab Director Steven J. Hoffman has accepted the role of Vice-President of Data & Surveillance with the Public Health Agency of Canada. In this new role he will focus on the modernization of Canada’s public health data architecture, surveillance systems, and risk assessment capabilities. This work will involve expanding the size of PHAC’s data and surveillance branch to deliver on Federal Budget 2022’s unprecedented $436 million investment in the agency’s “detect, understand and act” framework.

While Steven will continue as Director of GSL on a part-time basis, Global Strategy Lab’s Associate Director Mathieu Poirier will move into the role of Co-Director and provide day-to-day leadership for the Lab going forward. Mathieu will also continue in his role of Global Legal Epidemiology Research Director. Under his leadership with the GLE research stream, several pieces of research have been accepted and published in prestigious journals such as BMJ and JECH. Mathieu was integral to GSL being awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Grant and Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) JELF grant.

In addition Global Strategy Lab Research Manager Lathika Laguwaran will move to the role of Director of Operations, overseeing administration, communications, finance, human resources and strategy. Since starting with Global Strategy Lab in July 2014, Lathika has been an invaluable contributor to GSL research and has been integral to the lab’s growth from 3 to 30 people. In addition, Lathika spearheaded the latest round of strategic planning for the organization.

Congratulations Steven, Mathieu and Lathika!
